Sizing up your safety cabinet needs
A safety cabinet provides more than a secure means of flammable storage for liquids, chemicals, corrosives, acids and other volatile materials-it provides piece of mind! Having a flammable material storage plan in place for the protection of lives in case of emergency starts with a proper assessment of your storage needs. What type and quantity of liquids and materials will you need to store in a flammable storage cabinet? What type of reactive chemicals and solvents will you need to store in a chemical storage cabinet? Do the materials you need to store in safety cabinets have any special storage requirements?
A good place to start when determining your safety cabinet requirements is the Material Safety Data Sheet or container labels that accompany hazardous or combustible materials. Specific requirements for each type of material will normally give handling instructions and flammable storage information, among other things. Additional guidelines on safety cabinet requirements and storing hazardous materials can be obtained from your local fire marshal. The information you gather will all help you determine the size and type of safety cabinet or flammable storage cabinet you require.

Other great sources of information pertaining to flammable liquid cabinet requirements are the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). NFPA 30 Section 4-3.1, for example, limits the number of flammable liquid storage cabinets in any given fire area to three. Additionally, each safety cabinet can contain no more than 60 gallons of Class I Flammable Liquids, 60 gallons of Class II Combustible Liquids, or 120 gallons of Class III Combustible Liquids. OSHA offers similar regulations governing the location of flammable cabinets, the maximum amount of combustible liquids that can be stored in a safety cabinet, and the number of safety cabinets that can be located in a single storage area. Additional regulations you should be concerned with include temperature, ignition control, ventilation and segregation.
Safety takes planning.not luck!
Another important consideration-especially for chemical storage cabinets -is the proper segregation of stored materials to prevent incompatibility issues. Chemicals that are incompatible with one another and that inadvertently come into contact run the risk of fire, explosion, violent reactions or the expulsion of toxic gases. A physical barrier provided by safety cabinets is normally an effective means of proper segregation.
While considering segregation issues, you must also determine if the chemical you're storing is compatible with the chemical storage cabinet itself. Strong acids and caustics, for example, will corrode untreated metal safety cabinets. Your best bet for storing these types of chemicals would
be to first put them in Type I Safety Cans for the safe storage and dispensing of flammable liquids, or Type II Safety Cans for the storage and dispensing of all other liquids. Once your liquids are safely contained, store the Safety Cans in one of Pig’s full line of durable, chemical resistant safety cabinets that feature a powder-coat paint finish that minimizes the effects of corrosion and humidity. Safety cabinets are FM-tested and meets NFPA specs, and comply with OSHA regulations.
Speaking of NFPA and OSHA, a safety cabinet must meet a variety of these institutions requirements, depending on the purpose of the cabinet. For example, some states require a flammable cabinet to have self-closing doors armed with fusible links to protect chemicals from external fires or to isolate a fire inside the cabinet. Fusible links are devices that are engineered to melt at certain temperatures, thus allowing gravity fed or spring-assisted closing devices to shut and latch the doors in the event of a fire. Such a flammable cabinet should be double-walled, and have dual vents and grounding connectors.
